Ubisoft and Netflix are joining forces on multiple adaptations of Ubisoft’s long-running game franchise, Assassin’s Creed. Two employees of Ubisfot’s Film and Television division, Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik, will serve as executive producers for the upcoming live-action version of the series.

It’s still much too early in development to go into details as the team is still seeking a showrunner. There are plans for the video game series to see an animated and anime adaptation as well but, similar to the live-action, no details have yet been given.

Assassin’s Creed, as a franchise, has seen various historical eras utilized throughout the series. From its beginning in the Inquisitor era of Spain, to its next release which will find players raiding and pillaging as a Viking in the 9th century. So one could expect that these announced adaptations could be pulled from anywhere, historically speaking.

Netflix shared a cryptic teaser video which featured a Netflix-red iconic assassin logo.

Netflix original series VP Peter Friedland announced “We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” He goes on to say “From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

Assassin’s Creed is no stranger to Hollywood. An adaptation was produced and distributed to theaters in 2016 but was considered a flop by most critics. The film saw Michael Fassbender in the starring role and was set during the Spanish inquisition.

One would assume that Ubisoft will attempt to rectify this as they have been pursuing film and TV adaptations, including animated shows, for quite a while now. Even going so far as to create their own film division. Let’s just hope that they do a better job in the writing department this time around.
