Most people do not even realize that it is possible to WALK to Fire Island!! That or most people are just flat out too lazy to take a nice hike along the shore line and put some effort in to walk the 5 or 6 miles to get there.

If you park at Field 5, the one closest to the lighthouse, you can actually walk past the lighthouse to Kismet, Soltaire and other Fire Island beaches/villages.
