Paladins get more slots and a channel divinity for smaller stuff while Hexblades get two slots and a limited use curse but they have full level slots for stuff like Fear and Fly. Warlocks also have Mask of Many Faces and I've used Disguise Self on a one shot Bard and it's such a fun spell.

The hexblade is very good at what it does, but there are other rounder subclasses. No in single class characters it is not close to the best. I would put Genie and Undead well above Hexblade and Fathomless generally better depending on the campaign.

Unmounted: Warhammer. There are 3 versatile weapons that do 1d10 damage - Warhammer, battleaxe and longsword. Of these Warhammer is mechanically the best because more enemies are vulnerable to crushing damage than to slashing damage. This makes Warhammer better than Longword or Battleaxe.

If you want to be a melee-first warlock, go Hexblade. If you want to sling damage spells, go Fiend. If you want to be a healer or a utility spellcaster, probably go to a different class entirely.
