Is Hexblade the best Warlock subclass?

The hexblade is very good at what it does, but there are other rounder subclasses. No in single class characters it is not close to the best. I would put Genie and Undead well above Hexblade and Fathomless generally better depending on the campaign.

Why are Hexblade Warlocks so good?

Hexblade has some useful class features, like medium armour and shield proficiency, which can be helpful regardless of the pact you take. I think that's its strongest feature. Shield and Cone of Cold on its spell list are fairly good (although Shield burns through Warlock's limited spell slots very quickly).

Should I take Eldritch blast as a Hexblade?

As a melee Hexblade, getting just Eldritch Blast is a low cost way to always have a decent ranged attack as a backup for those moments when you really need one. It's reasonably powerful and better than trying to fumble around with alternative weapon, and the cost of a cantrip pick isn't high.

Hexblade is a nice option, but, until level 14, it is only good against a single creature, and once per short rest (even after 14th).
