Why is Mad Max a blood bag?

In the Mad Max universe, the term 'Bloodbag' refers to a person of perfect health who is forced to donate their blood to a person who has fallen ill. In Mad Max: Fury Road, Max Rockatansky is taken by a War party to the Citadel in order to give blood to Nux, who was dying from a blood-borne disease.
