I would say by turn or the century and modern standards BG falls somewhere in the middle. It is certainly a lot tougher than Diablo, WoW, Dragon Age; but it is magnitudes easier to pick up relative to Neverwinter Nights or NWN 2. Baldur's Gate is very hard, yes. That's one of the reasons people loved it so much.
