Why is Thancred's eye blue?

When we find Thancred, he is not blind, but his eyes (yes even the one under the patch) are a whitish-blue. The only explanation we get is that due to the time in the aether flow, Thancred was unable to use aether (i.e. can't teleport). We are led to assume that eye color change is due to that.
