Bungie released a trailer for Beyond Light that covers at least some aspects of the story we’ll see, and while it may not be anything groundbreaking or outside of what we were expecting, it’s still more information on what we’ll be seeing come November.

Eramis, Variks, and the Exo Stranger all makes appearances in this trailer, and if anyone wasn’t sure who the main bad guy of this expansion is going to be, it’s been pretty solidly confirmed that it’s Eramis. The Fallen Kell of Darkness, Eramis is the first person to harness the Darkness and the new Stasis powers that will be coming in the expansion.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Eramis was mentioned in the mission to reclaim the Outbreak Perfected pulse rifle. She’s been a growing threat to the Last City for anyone reading the lore, especially as she’s managed to form a new Fallen House from the remnants of a few others that weren’t folded into the House of Dusk seen throughout Destiny 2. How she claimed her Stasis powers is unknown, but it looks like she somehow brokered a deal with the Pyramid on Europa and splintered a piece of it to empower her House.

Variks seems to be the driving force in this expansion for the player Guardian, which is a bit of a shame as I was hoping it would be Mithrax and his House of Light to oppose the House of Darkness. Variks is seen sending out a signal to the Guardian in hopes of getting their help to stop Eramis, who apparently captures him later on, calling her “old friend” at one point in the trailer.

What exactly their relationship is is unknown, as there’s been no lore about the two in any way. This does put the Fallen in an interesting position, and one that they’ve been heading towards for a while now. Variks leads as the Kell of Kells, a prophesied leader of all Fallen. Eramis leads the House of Darkness, Fallen using the Darkness to claim revenge against the Traveler, while Mithrax leads the House of Light, aiding the Last City and the Guardian in protecting the Traveler.

Eramis will die or otherwise be eliminated from the equation during the DLC’s campaign or raid, leaving only Variks and Mithrax to lead the Fallen, although in which direction, and who gains more control, can only be guessed at.

The Exo Stranger makes her first real return to the franchise since the first Destiny game, and her exact role is still unknown. She’s with Variks when he sends out a message presumably to the Guardian or the Last City, but whether she was trying to stop him, help him, or just watch without being seen is anyone’s guess. She does seem to be speaking directly to the player in the trailer, and she can be seen flanked by Eris Morn and the Drifter, which means they could have some part to play in this, especially as all three have more experience with the Darkness in varying ways than any other person in the Last City.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light is due out in three weeks, meaning all our questions will be answered before too much longer. I, for one, can’t wait to see where this leads.
